Tuesday Evening Concert Series

November 12, 2006

The Tuesday Evening Concert series takes place 6 - 8 Tuesday's per year. Karen came to BA21 looking for a change to the current static website.

The new website features a bold new design. The word 'evening' in the title of the series, brings to mind the night time. So we decided to look for a photograph of Cabell Hall, the location of the Concert Series, at night. We found one on our favorite photographer service, Flickr.

After asking for permission to use the photo, we carefully placed it first in the footer, and then in the header of the site. Together with a pair of clef marks, and a refined gradient background, we feel the site reader really works.

The entire site is easy to manage using Textpattern. Karen regularly makes changes to all sections of the website.

Guano Boys

Cameron. has added a photo to the pool:

guanoboy.com/

Launched: July 4th, 2006

The new Guano Boys website launched successfully. This was a pro-bono project and represents BA21's first band site. It was a lot of fun working with the band members (most of whom I'd met around town over the years and of course listening to their unique reggae-ska-calypso-afro-caribbean-funk jams).

The band needed a new site badly. The first version of the site (which I'll blog about sometime when we get it back online as an archive) represented all the beautiful and cliche elements of a 90's website. You know, black background, rainbow colored text of all size and font, and the full page, single-column, center-aligned layout. It really is a beautiful example and deserves to be seen, so keep an eye out for an upcoming post on our weblog.

Some of the features we included:

  • Easy to update all content by the band members themselves (including text, images, song files)
  • Subscription feed for gigs and band 'happenings' (RSS/Atom)
  • Album listings (there's one there to start) with full length songs—using flash so the mp3 file is somewhat inaccessible
  • Direct link to album listing in the iTunes Music Store (that's just cool)
  • Referral tracking so the band can network more efficiently online

Buffalo2Step Photography

Cameron. has added a photo to the pool:

buffalo2step.com/

Launched: May 26, 2006

Here are some of the tools techniques used for the new site:

  • Textpattern blog and CMS web-based site editor. Bill is already blogging!
  • SlideshowPro for professional gallery presentation—much of the stock features, except the album selector was turned on by default and the gallery was resized. SSPAdmin (which has been surpassed by Director) was used to publish and edit the Flash gallery easily through a php/mysql web-based interface, much like Textpattern.
  • Mint to follow visits and referrals, as well as search terms and trends.
  • Fresh design by BA21—2 column layout, simple gradients and fades keep design fresh and focused on the text and photo content of the site. Let the colors of the photos speak over the dark grays of the gradient. This was a natural transition redesign from version 1 of the site.
